Poorly Insulated Attic in Manchester Township, NJ

Poorly Insulated Attic in Manchester Township, NJ Poorly Insulated Attic in Manchester Township, NJ

The attic of a Manchester Township home had insufficient insulation, relying on exposed fiberglass that provided little protection. Our inspection uncovered problems with air sealing and ductwork leaks, which commonly lead to high utility bills and homeowner discomfort. To tackle these issues, our team used ZypFoam for air sealing, mastic tape for duct sealing, built retaining walls, and applied TruSoft cellulose insulation, resulting in an impressive R-60 insulation value. Consequently, the homeowner now experiences a more energy-efficient and comfortable home.

Before picture shows a typical attic heating, cooling and duct system. The main metal trunks and plenums are not sealed and only have a 1/2" liner inside. The results are in the summer when the system is trying to deliver approx 57 degree air through ducts, that are heating up to 130 degree surface temperatures, they lose a tremendous amount of energy. In this case the system was not keeping up with demand on hotter days.   The opposite is true in winter- ducts try to deliver 110 degree air through ducts that are cooling down to 30 degrees or less. The after picture shows  Duct Encapsulation, the duct system is sealed and insulated with approx 3" of closed cell spray foam. This impoved the peformance of the duct system by 40% or more and now the system keeps up even on the hottest days!!  If you have a modern system it makes sense to upgrade ducts, instead of installing a larger more expensive system to solve the problem.

Job Stories From Ocean County, NJ
Crawl Space Insulation in Toms River, NJ

This customer had several common concerns in his home. A ranch style house build over a crawl space. One concern was cold floors in the winter and the other concern was dust and indoor air quality.

He did what many consumers do, he called a heating and air conditioning contractor. There solution was to install a new high efficiency heatpump system, that provided supplemental heat in the winter, filtered the air and killed germs with a UV light. That didn't do what was expected. He still had cold floors! Now he called an insulation company, who said of course your floors are cold you don't have any insulation. They added insulation in the floors and a liner on the crawl space floor.

The result was within 2 years of his attempted improvements, The crawl space was wet, smelly and moldy. The indoor air quality got worse. (approx 50% in your living space comes from below) and he still had cold floors! Dr. Energy Saver division of DH Services Group, preformed a whole house evaluation and proposed the following solutions to his problems. #1 Seal all the duct work for his new heatpump system, located in the attic. Leaky ducts in attics and crawls lose massive amounts of energy and bring in contaminated air. #2 Remove all contaminated and organic materials from the crawl space, Treat exisitng organic growth and install a Clean Space Crawl encapsulation system, including a SaniDry air and dehumidification system, a smart drain to detect possible plumbing leaks and install a serviceable entrance.

The End result: Customer has warm floors, the crawl space is dry, warm and safe, the indoor air quality was improved.

Better Than Expected Results!

Mary T. was referred to Dr. Energy Saver, Division of Dave Hoh's Home Comfort & Energy Experts to help her solve comfort and energy problems in her vintage style home at the shore. She was experiencing heating bills of over $300.00 per month in the cold weather. The hopes had major comfort issues, such as very cold hardwood floors, large temperature swings between rooms, and a damp musty crawl space infested with cave crickets. Mary moved into this as a retirement house and wasn’t happy how it performed.

We performed a comprehensive whole house evaluation, which included blower door air leaking test, infrared wall and insulation inspection in addition a thorough assessment of the home’s thermal and pressure baldrics from the crawl space to the attic!

We moved forward with the project in 2014. The overall results reported by Mary, is that her 2015 total heating cost $425 vs. $300 per month prior to work. (That is a huge savings) The floors are toasty warm, the house is comfortable and the crawl space is warm and dry.

Cold Floors and Crawl Space Encapsulation in Berkeley Township, NJ

Generally when we hear customers explaining to us that their floors are cold, we go straight to the crawl space. This homeowner in Berkeley Township, NJ needed our help and that’s exactly what we did. When inspecting the owner’s crawl space our team found an existing liner on the ground. There was a problem, though the crawl space had a basic liner the rim joists were left exposed and the crawl space was not properly encapsulated. Our team installed our CleanSpace Encapsulation Liner along the exposed exterior walls. Finally we used Closed Cell Spray Foam on the rim joists to air seal the crawl space. By creating a thermal barrier in the crawl space we can eliminate unwanted outside air from entering the crawl space. This unwanted air that leaks into the crawl space can create cold floors and unwanted moister in the crawl space.

Crawl Space Solutions in Lacey Township, NJ

This homeowner in Lacey Township, NJ had varying issues with their crawl space. When looking at the owner’s make shift sump pump we saw signs of the water levels reaching over the buckets lid. This make shift sump pump will never be able to pump water out of the crawl space and maintain normal levels. Our team replaced the owner’s make shift sump pump with our SuperPump System that features a sturdy liner, airtight lid, 1/3 hp cast iron pump which discharge up to 2200 gallons per hour, and a stand to keep the pump out of silt and sediment. Our team also insulated the crawl space by installing our SilverGlo insulation panels onto the exterior walls. We also spray foam the rim joists and insulate any windows or vents with our rigid foam panels. Next we install our CleanSpace Encapsulation liner with our foam TerraBlock Floor Insulation. Finally our crew will go around and air seal any seams of the SilverGlo foam panels with our orange ZypFoam sealant. This homeowner now has a properly insulated crawl space that can handle NJ’s rains.

Poorly Insulated Ducts in Lacey Township, NJ

Our team of experts inspected this homeowner’s attic in Lacey Township, NJ and found poorly insulated ducts. These ducts can be fixed by pulling together the old insulation and taping them back together. If the ducts are in really bad shape and cannot be reinsulated or fixed, we will replace the old trunks or ducts with new ones. The supply trunk can be easily fixed by encapsulating the ductwork with our SilverGlo insulation panels and by sealing the seams up with our orange ZypFoam sealant. Finally we will bury the ducts in our TruSoft cellulose insulation to reinforce the insulation so our customer doesn’t waste energy they are paying for. Our customer now has a much more comfortable and energy efficient home.

Dirty Insulation in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

Looking in this homeowner’s attic in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ we can see dirt building up in the fiberglass insulation. When fiberglass insulation is exposed it does next to nothing to insulate. As unwanted air circulates around the attic, that unwanted air will pass through the fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass insulation is a porous material and also can absorb moisture, possibly contaminating the insulation with mold or unwanted unhealthy air in your attic. When we find dirty insulation it is a sign of an attic that has not been properly insulated and air sealed. After air sealing the attic properly we can then blow-in our TruSoft cellulose insulation. With fresh new insulation and an air sealed attic, this homeowner can now enjoy a more comfortable and energy efficient home.

Dense Packing Garage Walls in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ

In Point Pleasant Beach, NJ we have a homeowner who wanted to create their garage space into a conditioned work space. The owner’s attached garage was too cold in the winter and needed to be insulated. Using our orange ZypFoam sealant we air sealed the attic and used our TruSoft cellulose insulation to insulate the rest of the attic floor. After finishing insulating the attic garage we dense-packed the garage walls with our TruSoft insulation. Dense-packing requires drilling holes into the cavity walls and using our hose to blow in the insulation. After the cavity wall is filled with insulation we finish by plugging each hole with foam and use one coat of spackle to seal the plug.

This garage is now more comfortable and ready for the homeowner to use the garage as a working space.

Encapsulated Crawl Space in Point Pleasant, NJ

This crawl space in Point Pleasant, NJ had inadequate insulation. Looking at the crawl spaces foundational outside walls the owner had no insulation. We also can see a torn clear liner on the floor of the crawl space doing nothing but collecting dust and holes. Some older homes like this one were built with vented dirt crawl spaces. This creates outside air to pass through the crawl space and leak into the rest of the home. With the lacking of the proper insulation on the floor and walls this crawl space can create moisture, humidity, mold, rot, attract pests, cold floors, drafts, hot rooms and more. Our team of experts installed our CleanSpace Encapsulation System with TerraBlock Floor Insulation and SilverGlo Wall Insulation in the crawl space. Also we blocked the vented windows with our SilverGlo Insulation boards and spray foamed the rim joists.

This homeowner now has a properly insulated crawl space that will provide a more comfortable and energy efficient home.

Poorly Ventilated Bathroom Fan in Brick, NJ

Our team was inspecting a homeowner’s attic in Brick, NJ when we saw the bathrooms duct just lying on the floor. When a bathroom exhaust fan is not correctly connected moisture will ventilate into the attic. Moisture that is being vented into the attic will condense into water. This moisture build up in the attic can cause mold and dry rot your roof. We simply connected the bathroom exhaust fan to a newly insulated duct and attached the other end through the roof to the proper vented hood. This bathroom fan is now properly ventilated!

Attic Insulation in Lakewood, NJ

In Lakewood, NJ, a homeowner faced discomfort in their residence during harsh winters and scorching summers. Taking prompt action, our team replaced the outdated fiberglass insulation and applied orange ZypFoam sealant to air-seal the attic floors. We constructed wooden retaining walls to contain the blown-in TruSoft cellulose insulation. Additionally, we installed wooden planking on the floors, creating additional storage space. This attic is now well-prepared for all seasons, ensuring the customer experiences a more comfortable and energy-efficient home.
