Inaccessible Attic Properly Air Sealed and Insulated in Howell, NJ

Challenge

This homeowner in Howell, NJ, was dealing with cold drafts and uncomfortable temperatures on the second floor. After addressing the adjacent wall in the attached garage, the next step was to tackle the main attic. Though the attic did not have a traditional access point, we were still able to gain entry.

Solution

Once we accessed the attic through the gable vent, we were able to properly air seal the space, improve ventilation by installing vent baffles, and blow in cellulose insulation to the optimal R-value of R-60. After the work was completed, the gable vent was restored to its original condition. The homeowner now enjoys a more comfortable home with lower energy bills.

In the attic of the attached garage, we installed rigid foam board with a radiant barrier along the adjacent wall to help stop air leaks and better retain the comfort of the conditioned living space.

Once the adjacent wall is properly insulated, we can then start work in the main attic, but the main attic is inaccessible.

We can access the attic through the gable vent, allowing us to properly air seal the space, install vent baffles, and then blow in TruSoft cellulose insulation.

TruSoft cellulose insulation was blown in to reach the ideal R-60 level throughout the attic.
