Cold Kitchen Floors and Frozen Pipes Above Garage in Highlands, NJ
Challenge
A homeowner in Highlands, NJ, was experiencing cold kitchen floors and frozen pipes during the winter. The kitchen was located directly above an unconditioned garage, where cold air entering through the garage door exposed the floor above to colder temperatures. This made the kitchen uncomfortable during the winter and increased the risk of the sink pipes freezing.
Solution
To address the problem, we dense-packed the garage ceiling cavities with cellulose insulation to help prevent heat loss through the kitchen floor and protect the living space above from the garage's outdoor temperatures. By drilling small holes between the ceiling joists, we were able to fill the cavities and create a thermal barrier between the unconditioned garage and the living space above. This helps keep the kitchen warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer while reducing heat transfer and helping protect the plumbing from freezing temperatures.
