Stopping Cold Floors and Drafts in Asbury Park NJ
Challenge
The homeowner Asbury Park, NJ was experiencing cold floors and noticeable drafts throughout the home. During our basement inspection, we found an open area where leaky ductwork was pulling in unwanted air. We also observed moisture intrusion through the porous foundation walls and unsealed rim joists. These issues allowed cold air to enter the home, contributed to uncomfortable floors, and created conditions that could support mold growth. Leaking ducts can also compromise indoor air quality by drawing in damp, contaminated air.
Solution
We addressed these issues by sealing the ductwork and spray-foaming the rim joists and sill plates to block air leakage into the conditioned space above. Rigid foam board insulation was then installed over the porous cinder block walls to help manage moisture and reduce the risk of mold growth. Finally, we installed and sealed a vapor barrier to prevent ground moisture and water vapor from rising into the space. As a result, the crawl space is now properly sealed, the floors above are warmer and more comfortable, drafts have been eliminated, and the homeowner is saving energy—leading to lower utility costs.
