Springs Rain, Humidity & Your Home's Hidden Risks Below Your Home!
We love New Jersey's beautiful spring and summer! But along with the nice weather, the increased rainfall and humidity can quietly cause problems in your crawl space, basement, and ultimately, your indoor air quality.
The Hidden Dangers of Crawl Space & Basement Humidity During Rainy Months:
- Damp Insulation = Wasted Energy: Just like a soggy sponge loses its absorbency, wet insulation loses its R-value. This means your heating and cooling systems have to work harder, leading to higher energy bills. Condensation can build in the insulation exacerbating the issue, keeping your insulation damp for longer. Wet insulation can cause odors, growth and worse mold.
- Mold & Mildew = Poor Indoor Air Quality: The dark, humid conditions created by rainwater seeping into the ground or by the constant temperature changes with the humidity are a breeding paradise for mold and mildew. These fungi release spores into the air, which can circulate throughout your home, triggering allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems. That musty odor you sometimes notice? It's often a sign of mold growth.
- Pest Infestations: Many pests, including termites, rodents, and various insects, are attracted to damp environments. Rainy seasons can drive them indoors in search of drier shelter, and a humid crawl space or basement becomes an ideal haven. These pests can cause structural damage and introduce contaminants into your home.
- Structural Damage: Over time, persistent moisture from rain can lead to rot and decay of wooden structural components in your crawl space and basement. This can weaken floor joists, support beams, and other critical elements, potentially leading to costly repairs down the line.
A Multi-Layered Defense Against Rainy Season Humidity:
To ensure a healthy and dry crawl space and basement, we employ a strategic combination of solutions:
- Blocking Ground Moisture (Vapor Barriers): Especially critical during rainy periods when the ground is saturated. Using a heavy duty 20 mil thick encapsulation liner with Ultrafresh anti-microbial ingredients in the product help stop ground moisture, vapors, humidity and potential growth or mold.
- Preventing Condensation (Foundation Insulation): Addressing the temperature differences that exacerbate moisture issues in humid weather. By insulating the porous cinder block walls (foundation walls) with foam boards we help prevent outside air from entering and from growth or mold forming from the cooler temps of the walls.
- Sealing Air Leaks (Rim Joist Sealing): Preventing the infiltration of humid, rain-saturated outside air. The exposed rim joists cause outside air to enter and can create moisture in the home causing more growth or mold. If the home has any crawl space vents we will seal them off by blocking them with foam boards and using foam sealant to seal them up.
- Actively Removing Moisture (Dehumidifiers): Providing an extra layer of protection during and after significant rainfall. By installing a dehumidifier we can significantly lower the relative humidity.
