Challenge
Cold Kitchen Floor in front of cabinets and sink.
This house is a Ranch style home build over a crawl space.
Solution
This customer had us come out to help solve the problem of cold floors in the Kicthen. Part of our comprehensive whole house evaluation to help diagnose issues, is to use a Blower door. A blower door is a calibrated fan controlled by computer which determines how leaky the house is vs. what it should be. Testing with the blower door simulates approx a 15 mph wind on all side of the house. While testing we also use a air leakage detector (smoke puffer) and Inrared cameras. Now we can see exactly where the cold air and drafts come from.
In this case we ended up air sealing and insulating the top of the house, to prevent warm conditioned air from leaking up and out as well as seal all the plumbimg, wire, and pipe penetration in the crawl under bath room and kitchen. This was a scope of work that fit the customers budget and solved the problem! The added benefit of making the house more comfortable is that we also generated considerable energy savings- the project will pay for itself!
