Solution
To address this issue, our team first air sealed the attic floors using orange ZypFoam sealant. We proceeded to insulate the metal ducts using two-inch SilverGlo insulation boards, which are equipped with a radiant barrier. Each loose flexible duct was reconnected and sealed with ZypFoam sealant. Wooden retaining walls were built to contain the blown-in TruSoft cellulose insulation. The enhancements made have led to the homeowner now enjoying a residence that is not only more comfortable but also more energy-efficient.

Ductwork is experiencing leaks at the flex trunk connections, and the insulation on the metal ducts is insufficient for effectively insulating the conditioned air. In the attic, temperatures can soar above 140 degrees. Without adequate insulation, the conditioned air is vulnerable to temperature fluctuations, impacting its ability to maintain a consistent cooling or heating effect based on the season.
The ceiling box or register box is allowing a significant amount of conditioned air to leak into the attic, resulting in wasted energy that the owner is paying for.
When using the infrared camera, we can identify the dark shades of blue that signify cooler air leaking out of the ceiling box and into the attic. We reshaped the existing register or ceiling box and effectively sealed it using orange ZypFoam sealant for the owner. The result? No more issues with a leaky ceiling box or register!
We can see that the flexible trunk is leaking where it connects to the supply duct, causing the air the homeowner is paying for to escape into the attic.
Examining the infrared camera, we can identify that the dark shades of blue pinpoint the exact location of the leak where the flexible trunk is connected to the supply duct.
Our next step involves encapsulating the ducts through the installation of SilverGlo insulation boards. For air sealing the ducts, we utilize orange ZypFoam sealant. These SilverGlo boards feature a radiant barrier, aiding in the maintenance of proper temperatures within the ducts.
Take note of how the wooden retaining walls effectively hold the blown-in TruSoft cellulose insulation. Additionally, we've incorporated wooden planking or flooring to provide the homeowner with easy access to the mechanicals and limited storage space. To ensure thorough air sealing, we used orange ZypFoam sealant on both the wooden flooring and the connections of the flexible trunks. As a result, this homeowner now enjoys a home free from leaky ducts, contributing to enhanced energy efficiency and overall comfort.
