Brick NJ Attic with Encapsulated Ducts Eliminates Leaks and Boosts Comfort
Challenge
This attic in Brick, NJ, had radiant heat from the roof warming the homeowner’s ductwork during the summer. The ducts were leaking, causing the air conditioner to run constantly as the hot attic air heated the cooled air moving through the system. The thermal image clearly shows the duct leaks and temperature fluctuations throughout the ductwork.
Solution
We air-sealed the entire attic and installed 2-inch rigid foam boards with a radiant barrier around the metal ductwork. After securing all four sides, we sealed any remaining gaps with air sealant to create an airtight encapsulation. This eliminated duct leaks and stopped radiant heat from warming the cool air inside. With the ducts insulated, we sealed the floor decking and blew in TruSoft Cellulose insulation to an optimal R-60 level. The result is a properly insulated attic with sealed, encapsulated ducts—improving comfort and saving energy.
