Wall, NJ Attic Air Sealing Project Fixes Leaky Can Lights with Airtight Covers
Challenge
During our free home evaluation in Wall, NJ, we found conditioned air leaking into the attic through gaps around the home's recessed (can) lights. Air sealing these openings is a critical step in improving a home's energy efficiency. While a single recessed light may not seem like a major issue, multiple unsealed fixtures can allow a significant amount of conditioned air to escape into the attic. This energy loss forces the HVAC system to work harder, increases utility bills, and contributes to uneven temperatures and reduced comfort throughout the home.
Solution
After air sealing the attic, we installed airtight can light covers over each recessed light. We then sealed every cover with an air-sealing sealant to eliminate any remaining gaps and stop conditioned air from escaping into the attic. Once the attic, recessed lights, and ductwork were properly air sealed, we installed blown-in cellulose insulation over the attic floor to complete the system. The result is a tighter, better-insulated home that helps lower energy costs, improves HVAC efficiency, and provides year-round comfort for the homeowner.
