In Oceanport, NJ, a homeowner experienced cold floors and drafts on the second floor due to a poorly insulated cantilever (bump-out). During the winter, cold outdoor air seeped into the cantilever, making the floors cold. In summer, hot air entered the same space, contributing to uncomfortably warm rooms.
Solution
We removed the soffit panels to access the cantilever and found inadequate insulation. We installed 4-inch SilverGlo foam boards to block each joist bay, sealing the edges with expanding foam. We then installed SilverGlo beneath the floor deck and sealed all gaps to help prevent outside air from entering. Finally, we reinstalled the soffit panels, leaving the cantilever properly insulated to help reduce drafts, cold floors, and uncomfortable temperatures year-round.
Project Summary
Products: 4" SilverGlo Rigid Foam Boards with a Radiant Barrier & Expanding Foam
This is the front of the home, where the cantilever, or bump-out, is located. Gaps in the soffit panels and inadequate insulation underneath can allow outside air to seep into the home, causing cold floors and drafts in the winter and uncomfortable rooms during the warmer months.
The second-floor room extends beyond the main exterior walls, creating a bump-out where cold outside air can seep through the floor joists, causing cold floors and drafts during the winter. In the summer, heat can enter through the same area, making the room uncomfortably hot.
We installed each joist bay with 4-inch SilverGlo foam board and sealed the edges with expanding foam. Additional SilverGlo was installed beneath the floor deck, with all gaps sealed to help stop outside air from getting in and improve comfort year-round.

Each joist bay was installed with 4-inch SilverGlo rigid foam boards, and expanding foam was applied around the edges to seal gaps and prevent outside air from leaking in.
Once the insulation was complete, we reinstalled the soffit panels, leaving the cantilever properly sealed and insulated to help minimize drafts, prevent cold floors, and maintain more comfortable indoor temperatures throughout the year.
